Knife laws in NZ

Hello,

I'm travelling to NZ in a few days and I'd like to ask what are the laws about carrying a knife. We'll be camping, so a knife is quite a necessary tool. I'm used to carrying my knife everywhere. I use an assisted-opening 9cm blade. Is it permitted? I know that some countries ban assisted-openers. I'd be very sad if my knife got confiscated upon arrival.

Thanks a lot for info.

A flick knife or spring loaded knike are likely to be confiscated. Buy a knife when you get here from any of the sporting goods stores.

Now I can see that assisted-opening knives are sold in NZ so probably they're not illegal, or am I wrong?

I'm not really sure if an assisted opener falls in the category of flick knives. I think it shouldn't but who knows?

OK, I've just got a reply from a knife store in Auckland saying that assisted opening knives are a "grey area" and they do not stock or sell those any more.

For me it means that my Benchmade stays at home. :)
