I am a NZer living in China and I regularly fly CZ domestically but was less enthusiastic about flying CAN to AKL last year -booked on price & scheduling. I had no major complaints. The plane was new, seats comfortable; meals adequate however the only coffee was "Nescafe 3-in-1" and the only tea was Pu'er, which is an acquired taste. In flight entertainment lacked the variety of English language blockbusters or new releases that you'd get on a top class western airline. Cabin service was adequate.

Australian friends recently visited me in China after flying CZ from SYD to Europe & back to CAN. Like me they are price conscious and felt they got what they paid for. If you want better service choose a more experinced airline like AirNZ/ Virgin; Cathay Pacific, Emirates, SQ etc.

Bernie, welcome to the forum :)

Your plight sounds terrible and I wish you luck with it.

But why not post on the Air Travel Forum? tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g1-i10702-Air_Trav…

friends of mine recently did SYD LHR SYD and went with no expectations and said while it was a LCC feel it was ok

sometimes you have to sacrifice comfort and service for the price - only you can decide if thats acceptable for you

I don't think CZ is positioned as a LCC. It does market itself as a full service airline and you don't have to pay extra for luggage or headsets/IFE or meals. Their aircraft are new because their fleet is growing rapidly.

It is just unfortunate that staff training may be inadequate and problems are more likely to occur when things go wrong, like delays. And the other problems relate to their understanding (or lack thereof) of the needs of an International clientele...

Very true, as became apparent in June this year when it refused to accept a transfer ticket from another airline (Air Canada) that had cancelled its flight. This left me stranded at the CZ gate in Los Angeles, despite having presented a Boarding Pass and what has subsequently been confirmed by CZ as a valid transfer ticket.

On returning to Australia, I asked CZ to please explain. The official response is that the transfer ticket was never presented by me! Suggestions by me that CZ review CCTV footage of the event in Los Angeles to determine the facts of the matter have not been followed through. When the chips were down, CZ was found wanting.

I have no experience with China Southern, but I flew Sydney to Shanghai (and return) on Air China. It is also listed on this website

businessinsider.com.au/…

as one of the worst but I thought it was fine. (I usually fly Air NZ or Singapore Airlines). I found the seats more comfortable than my next leg which was Sydney to Chch on Air NZ. The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was rice for breakfast, but what do you expect on a Chinese airline?! I wouldn't necessarily panic.
