Sydney! NZ has a higher rate of GST.

Depends what's on special and which currency you are using. Really no big differences in my experience.

Other than cook books and gifts we converted to Kindles. Way cheaper and more convenient.

I'm a kindle-convert too. Why carry heavy books when you can carry hundreds of books in just 300g of weight? And you get access to heaps of free books.

Only disadvantage of a kindle is you get made to turn it off during takeoffs and landings.

Books are expensive in both places: for those of us who still read books with real pages and stuff, many import them and it still works out cheaper. Won't work very well for a traveler, however. Maybe go second-hand, if you don't want to go digital?

It depends on what you like to buy. Having lived in both countries, there seem to be better sales on books, and cut-price deals on best-sellers in Australia. There is even one Australian bookshop that sells books by the kilo! If you are after a specific title however, Australia can be surprisingly expensive.
