The North and South Islands are in danger

New Zealand's North and South Islands may disappear according to a report by the New Zealand Geographic Board and you could instead be posting in the 'Te Ika-a-Maui' and the 'Te Waipounamu' forums. That will certainly make things clearer to everyone.

They are much nicer names. I live at the mouth of Maui's fish, guess that makes Auckland the other end of the digestive system.

Wait until the ethnics get hold of this. If one thinks Waitangi settlements are outrageous we aint seen nothing yet.

Hi weta, I actually like Te Wai Pounamu (The water of Greenstone) but it's the fishing story about the other island that I don't totally believe. I think that is just stretching the arms a bit much.

But which Maori names will be used? The South Island has at least two Maori names, probably more -

Te Waipounamu (The Greenstone Isle)

Te-Waka-a-Maui (the canoe of Maui)

anyhow, the people have spoken - take a look at the poll results
