Road Trip North Island

Hi all, my partner and I are travelling to NZ in late October/early Nov and have 2 weeks to travel around - separated into 2 week long blocks as we are going to Niue for a week in between. We would like to spend both of the week blocks on the North Island and are flying in and out of Auckland for all flights. Any advice on itineraries and not to miss destinations would be much appreciated! Thanks

Perhaps one week going north of Auckland, up the east coast to the Bay of Islands. Spending a couple of days there, going on a cruise around the bay and taking a tour up to Cape Reinga and along Ninety Mile Beach might appeal to you. Then return to Auckland via the west coast, and stopping to look at Waipoua kauri forest would make for a nice round trip.

The other week could be south of Auckland, going to the Coromandel, Rotorua, Tongariro National Park and Waitomo.

Is there anything you're particularly interested in, or any activities you would prefer to do? It helps when suggesting itineraries.

I'm also happy to give advice on Niue - great place to visit!

Thanks for your reply!

Yes we were thinking a week north and a week to south of Auckland might be the best way. When travelling in up the north, do you think it would be best to stay somewhere central and explore from there for a couple of days, or keep travelling each day and stay at different places?

We are interested in kayaking, snorkelling/diving and walks. My partner is also pretty keen on adventure type activites. And of course wine!

We were thinking of travelling south and then flying out of Wellington back to Auckland to catch our flight home - do you think this is a good idea? South of Auckland we are keen to visit Coromandel, Rotorua, Lake Taupo, see some Lord of the Rings scenery, Waitomo and glow-worm caves, Napier and Wellington. Do you think it is worth travelling to the West side of this part of NZ?

Yes any tips on where to stay and eat on Niue would be appreciated! We were thinking of staying at Namukulu Cottages or perhaps Coral Gardens Motel.. Have you dived on Niue?

Sounds like a good plan to spend a few days visiting wineries eg on Waiheke Island and the rest of the week around the BoI.

Then depending on your flight times either fly to Wellington & drive back or VV.

In one week you've only got time to do either the east coast (Coromandel,Rotorua, Taupo, Napier) or the middle (Rotorua, Taupo, Tongariro NP, Wellington).

Check out the Warkworth Matakana region less than an hour north of Auckland. Canoeing the Puhoi river at Puhoi, wineries at Warkworth and Matakana, lots of great walks and snorkelling at Goat island, Leigh.

I'll send you a personal message about Niue, because it's a bit off-topic for this forum. Flying one way between Wellington and Auckland is a good idea. I'd fly down to Wellington and work back from there. If you're keen on wine, then going via Martinborough and Napier would give you the opportunity to visit some vineyards. From Napier, you would then travel to Taupo/Rotorua and then to Auckland, possibly via either the Coromandel or Waitomo.

Thanks for the replies everyone - looked at Waiheke Island, and Matakana regions and both look great! Seems there are too many amazing places to go!

Think flying one way is the go then - just trying to decide which way.

In terms of attractions - are Taupo and Rotorua reasonably similar?
