Itinerary help for 12-14 Days in New Zealand

I'm hoping some people can weigh in with help for a trip my wife and I are planning. We're looking to spend 12-14 days (depending on how you look at it; Day 1 and Day 14 are traveling in and out, so 12 full days plus travel days).

We are in the early stages of planning, and are primarily looking for what are the "must see's" and "must do" activities for a trip across both islands in that time frame. We're currently planning to go somewhere between Feb and April - is that advisable?

I'll add that with 12 days to spend in New Zealand, you are best to stick to one island.

We are both 30, and fairly active. We would be interested in buggy or sky diving, but not just to do it.

We also enjoy museums, but have seen all the great museums of the US and Europe, so I assume we're not going to run across many must see museums. Mentally, I've been assuming the vistas are the real museums of NZ.

We aren't too into wine, so the vineyards aren't a huge draw, especially with limited days available.

The things that sounded most interesting based on initial planning are the mountains, glaciers, and fjords.

South Island. Fly in and out of Christchurch and do a loop going one way down the middle and the other way along the West Coast. You want to include 2 nights at Te Anau so you can drive (yourself or by coach) to and cruise the Milford Sound. You can "do" Milford Sound from Queenstown instead, but it's a long 13 hour day. Glaciers that terminate in a rainforest are located on the West Coast. Mount Cook is accessed from the inland route.

That's the bare bones of it.

Feb generally has the best weather of the year, Mar is often lovely, Apr getting early frosts and winter chills but with glorious blue skies and the changing of the leaves.

you could;

1 arrive Christchurch

2 drive Arthur's Pass to Punakaiki - pancake rocks

3 drive to Franz Josef or Fox

4 explore glaciers

5 drive Haast Pass to Wanaka

6 explore Mt Aspiring National Park, best skydive in the country

7 drive to Te Aanu, glow worm caves

8 explore/cruise Milford Sound, stay te Anau

9 drive to Queenstown

10 explore, bungee, jet boat

11 drive Lindis Pass to Aoraki/Mt Cook

12 explore Tasman glacier and terminal lake... with icebergs!!

13 drive to Chch

14 fly home

hope this helps :)

WanakaLakes is great with the day-by-day itineraries!

Just an FYI since it appears you're coming from the USA... It takes two days to get to NZ because you cross the International Date Line. So you have to plan for 16days away. Day 2 is lost. But you make it up when you come home. Being on the west coast, we always land a couple of hours before we left!

We just signed up for an expedition cruise starting Feb 6 in Wellington. and goes for 8 days to Milford Sound. We are looking forward to lots of nature activities and explorations, whale watching, visit cities of Dunedin and Stewart Island, Kaikora and Akaroa. We are adding a land tour for North Island sights before the cruise and trans alpine railroad journey and some other attractions in Queenstown where the cruise ends. We are double your age so we might take it a little easier than you.
