Dunedin or Hot Water Beach/ Cathedral Cove??

Hi,

I'm planning a trip to NZ with my parents in July.

We will spend 10 days there, and I've done a plan, but I'm not sure if it is good for winter... And I still have one day to fill up.

I'm not sure if we should go to Dunedin or to Hot Water Beach.

The two options are:

1- Auckland (morning) - Hot Water Beach (afternoon)

2- Cathedral Cove (morning)- Waitomo Cave (afternoon)- Rotorua( night)

3- Rotorua

4- Flight from Rotorua to Christchurch- drive to Mount Cook

5- Mt Cook

6- Mt Cook- Queenstown

7- Queenstown- Milford Sound- Queenstown

8- Queenstown- Franz Joseph

9- Franz Joseph

10- Franz Joseph- Greymouth (morning) train from Greymouth- Christchurch

OR

1- Auckland(morning)- Waitomo (afternoon) - Rotorua (night)

2- Rotorua

3- Flight from Rotorua to Christchurch- drive to Mount Cook

4- Mt Cook

5- Mt Cook- Dunedin

6- Dunedin- Milford Sound

7- Milford Sound- Queenstown

8- Queenstown- Franz Joseph

9- Franz Joseph

10- Franz Joseph- Greymouth (morning) train from Greymouth- Christchurch

Does it sound good? which one is more worthwhile going?

Welcome to the forum Clara :)

July is the coldest month of the year and you will have short wintery days with possible icy and/or snowy roads. It is not a time to be planning long drives - such as in your itinerary.

You live in Sydney? Then plan to visit one island this trip and save the other island for another visit. Trying to cram all this into 10 days in deepest darkest winter is, i think, poor use of your time and money.

Best to slow down and enjoy the moment rather than tick of a few places where you haven't even allowed time to explore.

In 10 days you can;

1 arrive Chch

2 TranzAlpine to Greymouth, drive to Hokitika

3 drive to Franz

4 explore

5 drive Haast Pass to Wanaka

6 drive to Queenstown

7 explore

8 bus/cruise Milford Sound, bus to Q'town

9 drive Lindis Pass to Aoraki/Mt Cook

10 drive to Chch, fly home

I think it would be better to visit Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove in the warmer months of the year. July is not a good time to get into your togs, even if the beach does have hot springs underneath it.

Ok. thank you very much for the tips!

Unfortunately, I`ve already bought the tickets to Auckland and from Christchurch. I`ll stay in Sydney for one year and my parents will be here just for some days ( we are from Brazil and won`t come back soon)..., that`s why we wanted to see as much as possible. So I think maybe its better to drop Hot water beach and dunedin. Fly from Rotorua to Christchurch in the third day and have one day more to do the south island previous plan. Does it sound better??

Nelson, I`ll take a look carefully in the schedule you sent me at the weekend and remake our plan and post here again!

Is it ok for you???

Thank you very much!!!!!!
