Family holiday with two kids under 2

We are planning a holiday to New Zealand with our two daugters (both under 2). We are thinking about 2 weeks late 2013 or early 2014 (avoiding school holidays).

We will probably pick 2 or 3 places to make camp where there is lots to do and we can do day trips from. We just don't know where to start or what would offer us the best options.

We are happy to stay in family rooms at back packers or if there is a better option to rent a house for a week that would also be great. We would love to do all the adventure activities but want to include the girls in what we do.....so hiking is in....jet boating is out!! We want the opportunity to relax a little plus spend some time in the great outdoors. What better place to enjoy spectacular scenery.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum :)

Feb is a brilliant month for camping. The weather is generally settled and the kids back in school.

Are you looking North Island... South Island?

Beach or mountains?

Wanaka is great for families and is very relaxed.

If wanting a real beach holiday then consider Abel Tasman National park and/or Golden Bay at the top of the South Island.

Perhaps best to do some reading on NZ and make a decision on where you hope to visit - then we can help make more informed suggestions :)

I think a holiday house for a week is the best idea. Wanaka as already suggested is a popular place for NZ families to holiday. In the North Island, Taupo or Mount Maunganui (beach), or the Bay of Islands. The advantag of a holiday house ( we call them baches in NZ) is that you will get several bedrooms, a washing machine, possibly a BBQ etc.

Hi,

I second the idea of renting a house and a babysitter!

Here is the site we use when looking for rental accommodation in NZ. Just put in the place, dates and budget range.

I'm sure one of the locals could recommend a babysitting service or simply ask the concierge at Hotel nearby.

Cheers,

Consider the Bay of Plenty and stay at campgrounds in motel units :

- easy driving to other places including Rotorua for a day trip; family friendly environment

With two young kids I would suggest somewhere beachfront or near beach, or near a good lake. My suggestion is Kaiteriteri near Nelson. or Golden bay. Kids can spend all day on the beach playing supervised. But Queenstown will also meet your needs if you want shopping, things to do and a reasonably cold lake!

A week in Wanaka and a week in Nelson/Golden Bay would be good. You could rent a house in both places. Wanaka would give you alpine scenery/activities and Nelson would give you the beach experience. holidayshomes.co.nz and holidayhouses.co.nz are both useful websites for finding short term rentals. We have used both sites a lot around NZ for weekends with extended family.

The site www.holidayhomes.co.nz is long established and reputable. How about a beachside holiday home near Auckland or Bay of Plenty so you can undertake day-trips in between lots of beach fun! Waiheke island is a great place to stay, with many beaches and children's activities including a petting farm, playgrounds and cinema. Close to Auckland city by passenger ferry to explore the attractions there and the January sales!

Pohara Beach (Golden Bay) is a nice location with young ones - very relaxed, gentle beach, but quite a lot to do around the area in the way of scenic spots, short walks etc. The Top 10 holiday park there has two-bedroom units. https://www.poharabeach.com/

And yes, Wanaka is a fabulous family destination in the mountains.

Pohara is a great place for a holiday with kids. We've had a couple of holidays there, though we camped at the Top Ten camping ground. They have little cabins too. Some are beachfront. The beach is very kid friendly as it's so flat, and the sand is great for sandcastles. Farewell Spit and Pupu Springs - both interesting places to visit but still kid friendly - are a drive away. Golden Bay is a lovely area.

You'll also find lots of family friendly activities in the Wanaka area.

Mount Maunganui

hi Im from Auckland an we always head to mt maunganui for summer theirs lots of holiday homes and camping places that offer cabins etc its only a 2 hour drive from Auckland and the drive downs awesome lots of places to stop. And its close to alot of other central north island city's rotorua, tauranga etc so you could go check out another city/town and still be back at the mount for dinner. but in saying that if a lot of the south island spots were 2 hours away id probably recommend them just the same
