Campsites booking and arrival times.

We will spend 5 1/2 weeks touring North and South Island in a small campervan in Feb/March 2014. I am in the process of planning an itinerary and have a few questions that I need help with please. I wondered if we need to book campsites in advance and if so, how far in advance. I will book a campsite in the Christchurch area for the day we arrive. Also, if we do not book campsites in advance, what time should we arrive a campsite to ensure a good chance of getting a plot? If we use DOC sites, what time should we aim to be at them in order to get a place

Some doc sites such as Totanui (Abel tasman park) booking is absolutely essential Jan Feb. Most other camps for your time of Feb March there generaly shouldnt be much difficulty in getting a site. however if in a commercial site and you need a powered site then booking is highly recommended.
