Just beginning...

I'm thinking about a 2 week trip in March or November. We have timeshare so we'd be looking at 2 x one week bases. I was initially thinking one week on each island, but a quick look at the map and I'm now thinking that I should choose one island only, and come back another time to see the island we missed. Thoughts?

We like outdoor stuff - walking, scenery, birdwatching. Not interested in cities. I'm planning to hire a car. The two areas that interest me most (without doing any research at all) are Bay of Islands and the mountains/sounds of the South Island (yes - very convenient getting from one to the other!!)

Thanks, Loki

Your planning is sound.

Why not stick with the South Island this trip and cover the North Island next time.

Rather than Bay of Islands consider Abel Tasman National Park and Golden Bay. The same stunning scenery as BOI except less tourism and far better weather. This area of Nelson to Golden Bay boasts the highest sunshine hours of NZ with far lower rain than BOI.Plus stunning walks, kayaking, beaches and boating.

Wanaka or Queenstown will be your second South Island base. And yes, you can fly from Nelson to Wanaka or Queenstown and return to Oz from Queenstown. Or take a few days and drive from one to the other.

You can drive

Nelson to Punakaiki

to Franz Josef

to Wanaka

March or Nov? Both will be splendid, March is likely to have the more settled weather.

happy travels :)
