Family of 4 travel tips to NZ Dec. 2013 (kids 10 & 8)

What are the top places to visit? Should we only do 1 island? If so, which one? Considering rental of a camper van vs. lodging along the way? We enjoy hiking & camping! We would love to see wild life and as much of the beautiful mountains, glaciers, beaches...

Hi Christa,

How long is your visit to NZ? If it's 2 weeks or less, better to explore one island. The South Island has mountains, glaciers, greater range of wild life, whale and dolphin eco-tours, coastal sounds and nice beaches.

The North Island has volcanic mountains, thermal attractions, wonderful beaches (although a little cool to swim in during December), native bush, Kiwi-birds in sanctuaries, coastal hikes, eco-tours. North Island is smaller than the South Island. Hire a family sized sedan and staying in motels and holiday parks would provide more space and is a cheaper option overall.

Our visit to NZ will be 2 weeks. Thank you so much for your recommendations. It is greatly appreciated as we are a little overwhelmed with trying to see as much as possible in 2 weeks:-) We love hiking and exploring the outdoors with our children but need to make it all family friendly! Thanks!

Go to your local travel agents and got some info on NZ tours - see which tour you prefer and then plan from that.

NZ travel is very easy - the hardest part is deciding what to skip. However you don't live far away so you can always pop back for more.

Once you choose which island take a look at some of the many itineraries here on the forum.

Happy planning :)

With only two weeks and kids your age, I'd recommend doing a North Island tour. eg you could fly in and out of Auckland, doing a loop around Waitomo, the Volcanic Plateau, Rotorua and the Coromandel.

The South Island will be even better with 3-4 weeks and older kids, so you could save that for a later trip. If you are dying to see the South Island, don't try to do the whole thing in two weeks, it's too big. Choose upper, middle, or lower to base your trip around, so you have time for doing stuff rather than spending most of your time driving.

Flights will be getting heavily booked for December now so you'll need to make your minds up fairly quickly. Consider an open jaw ticket too.

Thanks Jean! Great advice:-) We are leaning toward only one island this visit & hoping to return again to do the other. There is just so much we want to see but also want to enjoy! Yes, we do need to book soon as we have been watching the flight prices rise! What is an open jaw ticket???

Open jaw flies in to one city and leaves from another. Eg Melbourne to Christchurch, then Queenstown to Melbourne
