Fox Glacier

Hello, we are looking into possibility of flying to ChristChurch and do Fox Glacier

and I have read about the Fox Glacier Guided Tour.

I have a question, is it a must to join the guided tour, or it is possible for tourist to go around themselves and hike at least to the face of the glacier (the bottom of it).

We have one elderly age 75 who is not fit, so not sure if we can join any of the glacier hiking tour.

thanks

The most dangerous part of a Glacier is the terminal face. people get killed by taking themselves to the terminal face after ignoring all warning signs to not proceed past thebarrier tapes. the only way to go onto the ice is by a properly guided tour. on the ice with out a guide can be very dangerous.if a member of your group is unfit, a heli hike may suit them better, or otherwise do not proceed from the car park viewing area.

Or do a helicopter flight to land on the glacier - no hiking required :)

Yes, you can walk on a relatively easy track to a viewing place where you can see the end of the glacier. As has been said, it is dangerous to go right up to the ice (and people have been killed). However, you can see the glacier relatively closely.
