Visiting Antartica - cost from NZ

apologies if i am a bit niave here, but i am taking 9-12 months off next year and pondering the antartic as a trip option as its quite exciting, and leaving from New Zealand.

Now the total cost from looking online i think will easily hit $10k? is this fair?

I can see good trips for $6k for 14 days, but how much more for equipment and related tour specific items? I have hiking clothing already but likely not sufficient for this?

i cant find this being discussed on the forum, so i would appreciate any comments

thank you

$10k sounds way too cheap for Antarctica. are you travelling by boat or plane. Perhaps you are looking at a cruise for nz sub antarctic islands? are you with a tour? What accommodation were you considering? Obviously you dont just rock up at Antarctica, it requires lots of specialist gear and planning.

Generally South America is a cheaper base for Antarctica trips, but sometimes the mass-market cruise lines do relatively affordable cruises that go from NZ to South America or vice versa, or NZ to Australia or vice versa. A travel agent who specialises in cruising should be able to help.

Orion does cruises from NZ that look wonderful but they are very expensive. orionexpeditions.com/expeditions/antarctica

If you can't find a suitable mass-market cruise, you might find it cheaper to fly to South America and depart from there.

Hi Mark

Please post links to the trips you are looking at.

I have twice visited Antarctica - from Argentina and from Tasmania - and although I travelled a number of years ago I paid far far far more than $10,000. Most trips now begin at US$20,000

Antarctica is a very special destination, and more akin to sub orbital space flights than mass tourism; and as others have pointed out, it is eye-wateringly expensive.

I have a friend who did a tour from Bluff to Antarctica, returning to Lytellton, last year. I never asked him the cost, and he never volunteered it, but he did say it was the best thing he has ever done.

They visited McQuarrie Island, Auckland Island, Shackleton's Hut, and Scott's hut, as well as Scott Base (the NZ antarctic base). There were shore expeditions most days to visit penguin colonies, seal colonies etc. As far as I know the tour company provided all the cold weather gear, including jackets, trousers, boots, etc. All my friend had to take was regular clothing for on board the ship.

The ship they sailed on was a Russian Ice breaker, with a Russian crew, and New Zealand expedition leaders & cooks. There are usually 1 or 2 departures each southern summer.

You may not be aware of it, but there is a TA forum for Antarctica. Whoops, I just checked and you have also posted there, but not asked in respect to departure from NZ.
