Suggestions for NZ Trip?

Hello,

I am considering a 2 week trip (I'm aware that a lot of people don't think 2 weeks is long enough, but I can not take any longer) to New Zealand sometime in the first 1/2 of 2014. I'm a female in my mid 30's and will probably be traveling solo. I'd like some advice on the following:

- Is it too late to start planning a trip for February, March, or April?

- I'm interested in hiking the Milford Track - it looks like permits to hike the track aren't available until late March/early April - is April a good time of year to visit NZ? Should I plan my trip around the Milford Track or are there other hikes that are just a good/better to do instead?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

No it's not too late to plan. Feb - April usually has settled weather and the kids go back to school around Feb 7th so things quieten down a lot from there through to Easter.

If you want to do the Milford Track, book it soon and plan the itinerary around that. There are hundreds of tracks worth hiking in NZ, but Milford is the hardest to get into so if you can get in there I would say go for it - you will probably want to come back.

In two weeks including the Milford Track, you'll need to restrict your trip to the lower South Island, otherwise you won't have time to do anything except get from A to B every day. The lower South Island is the most stunning part of NZ anyway so a perfect choice for a first trip.

Will you be hiking alone or on a guided trip with Ultimate? If alone you have dozens of hikes to choose from, but if you require a guide & hot showers etc then Ultimate is one of the few licensed operators. Kepler is recommended because it is circular so you don't need any shuttle buses. Routeburn is also a very popular hike but ends 100s of KM (by road) from the starting point so shuttles are a bit more expensive.

April nights are starting to get cold and if Easter occurs around that time, expect a surge in bookings as it is the last holiday weekend before winter sets in ;-(

Milford for early 2014 already sold out. Ultimate guided would have availability. Milford is stunning. But in the area I also recommend Routeburn, Kepler or Hollyford, although I wouldnt do hollyford solo. Other great solo tracks are abel tasman or queen charlotte sound.
