Is it worth spending Waitangi Day in Wellington?

My husband and I are going to get the ferry from Wellington to Picton and then the scenic train from Picton to Christchurch. We're doing this on either 6th or 7th Feb. The 6th Feb is Waitangi Day, when I understand some events happen in Wellington. The question is; are they 'not to be missed'? Should we stay in Wellington for Waitangi Day and then travel on the 7th? Cheers!!

In fine weather Wellington is a fabulous city. On a public holiday the waterfront is alive with people & activities. If this is going to be your only day in WLG then definitely stick around. If the weather is bad ( today is awful - wet & windy) there is still the National Museum, Te Papa.

Without knowing what you consider 'not to be missed', there are some interesting things happening in Wellington that day. There are celebrations in the waterfront area, which are likely to include the two Maori war canoes being taken out on the harbour. These are traditional vessels with elaborate carvings and feathers, and it's not common to see them in use.

Te Papa will probably have some specific Waitangi Day activities. Also Archives New Zealand usually opens so that people can see the original Treaty of Waitangi.

Out in the suburbs, Orongomai marae in Upper Hutt has in previous years hosted a Waitangi Day celebration.

Frank Kitts Park on the waterfront normally has activities and events running all day and they are free as is Te Papa

They usually have free outdoor concerts at the waterfront if you want to get a taste of contemporary New Zealand music. Last year Ladi6 and Trinity Roots were played - it may not be to your specific taste, but it is still a nice family atmosphere in general.
