13 days North South Itinerary

After reading through various posts, we have made the below two itineraries. We have currently 2 options and it is hard for us to decide which one is better. Please advice.

We are couple, both about 30 years old. We will be in New Zealand in the second half of February 2014 for 13 days. We are more interested in New Zealand landscapes, nature than cities, museums, entertainment.

Both options are designed in such a way as to take advantage of the cheapest possible domestic flights on these dates.

OPTION 1 (Queenstown – Christchurch)

1. arrive Auckland morning, fly Queenstown, stay (jet-lag)

2. cruise tour Milford Sound (bus), back to Queenstown

3. Queenstown, explore

4. drive Wanaka, explore

5. drive Glaciers, explore

6. drive Arthur’s Pass, explore

7. drive Mt. Cook, stay

8. Mt. Cook, explore

9. drive Christchurch, explore

10. fly Auckland morning, explore

11. drive Rotorua, explore

12. Rotorua, explore

13. back Auckland, fly home evening

OPTION 2 (circuit)

1. arrive Auckland, stay (jet-lag)

2. drive Rotorua, explore

3. Rotorua, explore

4. back Auckland, fly Christchurch, explore

5. drive Arthur’s Pass, explore

6. drive Glaciers, explore

7. drive Wanaka, explore

8. drive Queenstown, explore

9. cruise tour Milford Sound (bus), back to Queenstown

10. Queenstown, explore

11. drive Mt. Cook, explore

12. drive Christchurch, fly Auckland evening

13. Auckland, fly home evening

What do you think?

option 2 works best.

Though I do suggest a change -

6 drive to Glaciers, explore

7 drive to Wanaka - allow 6 plus hours with stops

8 explore

9 drive to Queenstown

10 cruise tour Milford Sound (bus), back to Queenstown

11 explore

12 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

13 drive to Christchurch

14 fly to Auckland, fly home

happy travels :)

Hi There

As you probably realise WLnz is very knowlegable in this. From one tourist to another I can tell you that I did a similar trip to you last year and your original plan between Christchurch and Queenstown is too tight. The drive from the Glaciers to Wanaka is very long, you will want to stop at places to see the views, waterfalls, forests etc and you will be tired after the drive.

Last year I drove:

ChCh via Arthurs Pass to Hokitika stayed 1 night.

Hokitika - Holitika Gorge to Franz Josef stayed 1 night.

Franz Josef Glacier walk very early then drove to Wanaka stayed 1 night.

Puzzling world, lake walk and drove Crown range to Queenstown stayed for 2 nights.

We really wished we planned 2 nights in each place as by the time we got to QT we were really tired and didn't want to do much! We missed a few things along the way because of our schedule too, Glow worm dell in Hokitika, some of the lake walks en route to Wanaka.

Things to remember about driving in NZ, it always takes longer than you think, there are lots of things you'll want to stop and look at.

If you don't see it all, you'll just have to come back again! :)
