In today's paper - a story about tourism businesses receiving an email offering them 20 fake TA reviews for $300.

SouthIslandBill it's pretty easy to detect fake reviews - they are written in very poor English and grammar and don't give any cogent reasons behind the rating other than a rave.

There is no sure way of detecting fake reviews. An Interesting comment in the above stuff link was made comparing istes in NZ to the company that sells fake reviews. The isites will only recommend a business or service that has paid to be in the isite. Is that much different to the company that gets paid to post fake reviews?

Hmm South Island Bill you have made a good point. One difference is that the money paid to an Isite is usually spent promoting the area for the good of all rate payers or at least I hope this is so. The money spent on fake reviews is paid to an individual.

I was reading up on a restaurant in Blenheim and 19 of the 30 odd reviews it had were by people with only one or two reviews. Its not even a restaurant, its a deli. Owner seemed very familiar with TA and ratings.
