Bachs and holiday homes - Reliable alternative to motels

We are a family of 7 - 2 adults and 5 kids travelling to New Zealand in November/December, planning to self drive both islands. We generally tend to use holiday homes in Australia when we holiday as we find they have more room and are often more affordable than motels. Just wondering if this is a 'safe' option in NZ - whether there is a high risk of scams with bachs. I know in some other countries this can be the case and one needs to be very careful in checking reviews and checking into the actual owner of the advertised property - do I need to be this careful? Are there any particular websites that you would suggest? Also on a self drive holiday where we may only stay in some areas for 2/3 nights do you think bachs would be suitable, or on these shorter stays should we be looking more at motels?

Have found them very reliable - but be sure of the location of them.. However, in most cases you will need to provide own linen and clean the homes before you leave. when Im on holiday I find that most inconvenient so usually arrange a cleaner when booking. There are a number of holiday home rental websites

are the most frequent I use.

The website www.holidayhomes.co,.nz is long established and reputable, and is popular for holiday makers - both domestic and international. Very user-friendly too.

You may not need to hire or provide linen for homes in this site. Check individual listings for a minimum rental period though.

At the top of the page in the green bar is Vacation rentals, you can not go wrong there.

We have often rented houses or apartments on the above mentioned sites. We always make sure of course, coming from the UK,that they include towels and bed linen.

We've had some lovely properties during our three visits. You can always find something in your price band and as they list all the fixtures/fittings etc you will be able to see straight away if they include laundry facilities, dish washers etc. We've yet to stay in one that didn't have a washing machine and full kitchen facilities.

Although this is called a Bed and Breakfast book, there are also apartments and self-contained accommodation. We've used it a lot and found it very good.

You can search online or order the book which is free.

Just another alternative for you to look at.

as with the other replies......we found then great...bookabach and holidayhomes. Do read carefully some of them you need your own linen etc which is not great when travelling around unless you have a sleeping bag. Also some charge quite a lot for cleaning. Check minimum hire.....sometimes it is 3 days. We were on the South Island in December and stayed at the following.....all of which were great:-

Christchurch....Ashord motel, Papanui Rd...great location, can walk to town, 15 mins drive from airport

Queenstown....Crowne Plaza

Fox Glacier....Westhaven Motel

Lake Tekapo...The Barn...found on holidayhomes (this slept 8 and was a fab find)

Te Anau....Asure Amber lodge

Bear in mind in some of the motels you might need 2 rooms......so it may be cheaper for a rental property.

We have found bookabach.co.nz totally reliable and all the information you would require is on the website. Some places do require a two night minimum for example and it will say if linen is provided.

It is a great way to stay at some unique properties in superb locations in New Zealand.

If you see a home that you're interested in but the listing says they don't supply linen, inquire of the owner. We found the owner willing to leave their bed linen and towels for our use.

Also inquire about cleaning - we found that sometimes we were expected to leave the house neat and tidy as we found it, on another rental we had the option to clean it ourselves or the owner would have a cleaning arranged upon our departure for an additional fee, and other rentals included the departure cleaning in the rental fee.

If you want wifi internet and don't see that on the listing, also inquire. We found in several cases they did have it available for free but had not updated their web listing.

We have had many family holidays using the sites mentioned above. It's a great way for a larger group to enjoy some of NZ's holiday spots. I agree re the cleaning. That is the only thing that puts us off a bit now. I would be happy to pay extra and be able to walk out at the end of our stay. Have never had any problems with the houses we've booked.
