mobile phone in NZ

We are travelling the north island in a campervan soon, and our Aussie mobile wont work in NZ , it's a bit old , so no use buying a sim card. Does any body know if we can buy a prepaid in Auckland, phone and sim card, we don't need data, just calls ,in case of emergency and to phone a couple of friends. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks Dee

The Warehouse (there is one close to the airport) has a cheapie Nokia phone including sim at almost throw away price (I think $29). Countdown Supermarkets are doing a similar deal.

A couple of years ago in a similar situation I got my cheap phone from a Dick Smith Electronics Store. It lasted about 2 years.

Thankyou all, if I buy the phone, at the warehouse or Dick smith, do I have to register it or anything, or does it just work straight away. I'm not tech minded, so am a bit dumb with such things.

They normally come with $20 loaded on, charge it up, insert the sim and you're away.

Just so you know our mobile charges are stupidly expensive over here.
