After a wine tour it wouldnt be a good idea to do much travelling. wine and driving and all. It is a bit of a detour to spend the day on Abel Tasman. Its a 2 hour drive from Nelson to Picton and you need to be there an hour before with vehicle on the ferry.

dont drive under influence of alcohol. However if sober, I recommend driving to Nelson and staying there.

then do day trip on Abel Tasman - boat cruise, walk and kayak day trip would be my recommendation, and return to Nelson. You will need to allow 3 hours for travel and check in for return trip to Picton.

However, the Queen Charlotte Sound is accessed from Picton and also has wonderful kayaking, walking and some great accommodation such as lochmara lodge, punga cove or furneaux lodge.

But then you are looking at almost a 4-hour drive from Picton. And the trip over Takaka Hill is probably one of the squiggliest in all of New Zealand.

I would not recommend driving to Totaranui from Renwick. It is a huge drive. And windy and narrow in places. Kaiteriteri or Marahau are the southern entrance to the Abel Tasman and where all the boat and kayak operators operator from. or you can walk 2 hours to apple tree bay.
