Help with itinerary for 2 week honeymoon

Hello fellow tripadvisors,

I just got married and we are planning to take our honeymoon to New Zealand in December.

We are planning to stay for 2 weeks to explore the North and South Island. I could really use some advice on getting started with an itinerary. We are flying into Auckland

Things we enjoy...

-Scenic routes, some hiking

-learning more about Maori culture

We'd like as much advice as you can offer, as far as which areas are MUST see and if 2 weeks will give us enough time to explore the islands. Also, should we rent a car and plan on driving alot or fly?

Welcome to TA, Danielle and congratulations.

With only 2 weeks you are not going to cover both islands so you will have to be selective. One option does involve several domestic flights:

1.arrive AKL, Relax/explore

2. Great Sights coach tour to Rotorua via Waitomo Caves (2 N)

3. Explore Rotorua - thermal parks, Maori cultural show etc.

4. Fly to Christchurch; explore

5. Rent car and drive a circle for 9-10 days: Chch to Punakaiki;

6. Punakaiki to Franz Joef Glacier (2 N)

7. Glacier hike

8. FJG to Wanaka

9. Wanaka to Te Anau (2 N)

10. Day trip to Milford Sound)

11. Te Anau to Queenstown (2N)

12. Explore

13. Drive to Mt Cook

14. Drive to Chch; fly to AKL; fly home.

Hope this helps

NZ is one of my favourite locations on the planet. It is certainly the place to visit for bush walking in amazing landscapes and the North Island has extant Maori culture.

However as far as beaches go it wouldn"t be my first choice. Great advice and draft from zhuhai2007 IMHO!

If you are interested in combining beaches, scenic routes and Maori culture, the North Island offers your best chances of exploring these interests.

Auckland including the Museum with its daily concerts, Northland - Bay of Islands, Rotorua, East Cape and Gisborne, and Wellington's Te Papa Museum could be included.

The East Cape from Opotiki to Gisborne is one of the best kept secrets so far as being off the beaten track and some glorious scenery while retaining a strong presence of Maori culture. Same too with the Far North, including Hokianga, Kaikohe and Bay of Islands historic sights. Wonderful beaches in all these regions.

Some nice bush walks in North Island regions, as well as coastal walks. Tongariro Crossing is one of the best known day hikes.
