18 day itinerary - help!!!

Hi there, we are travelling with our 3 year old and 16 year old next week to NZ and need help in fianlising an itinerary. We fly in and out of Auckland but are hiring a car here is what we have but I am not sure about fox glacier with the 3 year old.

Day 1 - Auck

Day 2 - Hamilton & Waitomo caves

Day 3 & 4 Rotorua

Day 5 Napier

Day 6 & 7 Wellington

Day 8 - Nelson

Day 9 - Hanmer Springs

Day 10 - Greymouth

Day 11 - Fox Glacier

Day 12 -14 - Queenstown (day trips to Milford sound?)

Day 15 - Mt Cook

Day 16 & 17 Christchurch

Day 18 - Auckland

Is this do-able and does anyone have any better ideas?

oh dear. Another brutal itinerary with you spending all day in the car racing from place to place, yet no time to explore. Why go to Nelson? It will take the entire day to get here then the following day you zoom off across the island on another forced march. Why?

check your drive times here - add longer for food, walks, sightseeing etc http://maps.aa.co.nz/#directions

a more family friendly tour for the South island -

8 ferry to Picton, drive to Hanmer

9 drive to Chch

10 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

11 explore Tasman glacier terminal lake and icebergs

12 drive to Wanaka

13 explore Puzzling World etc

14 drive to Te Anau

15 explore Milford Sound, stay Te Anau

16 drive to Queenstown

17 explore

18 fly to Auckland

Safe travels :)

I'd follow WLnz's advice. Also cut a day in Wellington. Your 16 year old might like zip lining in rotorua or white water rafting at okere falls-you & the three year old can follow them down the river.

Also, I know it's the only suggestion I ever make, but if you are short on time do the Milford sound by bus from Queenstown. Packs a lot of sightseeing into an informative day.

Nelson in this plan would only make sense if flying North to South Island (as opposed to ferry crossing) In which case I would drop Hamner, and include a Wanaka stop between Glacier and Queenstown.

Would consider skipping Mt Cook and Chch (return to Auckand ex Qtown) and enjoy a bit more relaxed time along the way. You surely won't run out of activities.

Wellington has a lot to offer for families including Te Papa Museum, Cable Car ride and Botanical Gardens, Zealandia, Weta Cave. I'd remain with the 2 nights, given that the first night will follow a full day of travel from Napier.

Leave Hanmer in if driving also. The thermal pools are a welcome attraction for family groups. Pretty alpine town in which to rest up.

Consider skipping Napier as you will not have time to fully enjoy what Napier/Hawkes Bay has to offer. Drive time Rotorua to Napier without stopping is 3hrs; drive time Napier to Wellington without stopping is 4.5hrs.

Leave Rotorua 8.30am-ish for Taupo stopping off at tourist sights along the way. Arrive Taupo for brunch. Then drive on to Wellington via Desert Road.

You may also be hard pushed to find one night accommodation over Easter weekend.

You want to enjoy your time in NZ, not just see it all pass you by through the windscreen of your rental car.

What happened to the West Coast? On the 5th are you planning to DRIVE or fly from QTN to Chch? It is a long drive (7-8 hr) on a road you have already driven. I would recommend dropping one night in Chch in favour of a night in either Wanaka or Lake Tekapo just to break the journey.
