Welcome to the NZ Forum. It really depends on your interests, budget - and how much time you have. 3 weeks is a popular length of time (1 week for the SI & 2 weeks for the SI). However many people only have 2 weeks holiday & have to use more internal flights to get from one destination to another. If you have less than 3 weeks in total it is best to visit one country only.

Hi travelguy,

The gulf islands in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, including Waiheke island are top places in the North Island -

Coromandel peninsula is another outstanding coastal area -

Tongariro National Park has year round appeal, with its day-hike being one of the best attractions in NZ. A splendid group of three volcanic peaks located in the central North Island, with short alpine walks also -

Ohope beach near Whakatane in the eastern Bay of Plenty was voted NZ's top-beach for 2013 - http://www.whakatane.com/

All the best for your holiday plans.

That clears things up a lot - I think a month in each country would work pretty well, but do NZ first as Aust can get very hot and Jan/Feb is the Wet Season in QLD.
