14 Day Family Holiday with 2 toddlers 4 adults and Grandma

Hi everyone,

We are planning a 14 day NZ trip for 2015 . Our family will be 4 adults ( 25 -32) a 2 yr old and 3.5 year old and Grandma who cant walk long distances but will be on hand to look after boys now and then while the others go adventuring. We will be flying from Aus into Auckland. We dont know much about NZ and would love suggestions on a relaxing fun holiday with a mix of things for all of us . Any ideas will be appreciated :) Thanks

Welcome to TA. Any idea yet what time of year you might come? Will you hire 2 cars or a people mover? Would you consider 1 or 2 domestic flights to get down to SI? Any chance that you can alter your flights to fly one way (in or out) from CHC instead of AKL? This would reduce the need for backtracking. What are your interests?

Three options in brief - you can research all of these on previous threads:

1. The most relaxing - Stick to one island & drive around it in a circle, with 2 nights in each place;

2. Fly to Queenstown and work your way north with about 8 days in the SI & 6 days in the NI;

3. Hectic pace - drive to Rotorua/Taupo & back to AKL over 3-4 days; fly to CHC & drive a 10 day circle of the lower SI down to Te Anau/Queenstown via the West Coast & back to Chch via Mt Cook & Lake Tekapo.

Thank you so Much for the welcome:) We are thinking anytime from march -may. Flights arent booked yet but all options given to us arrive in Auckland ( We are flying from Adelaide). Im sure we could investigate different flights. Hiring a people mover is an option. Obviously having 2 little ones with us (who will still be having day naps) it would be best not to have too longer journeys. It would probably be best to do a relaxing mode with possibly only a few base stops where we stay a while but can do trips/ activities from. :) So suggestions would be really helpful as we have no idea where to start !!! Thankyou Again..

Hello.

New Zealand in my opinion is a country renown for its natural beauty...a place to soak in some majestic sights. If you are going to want something to do around every corner opposed with something to SEE it may let you down a bit....not saying there isnt a LOT to do, but if you are adventure seeking or wanting some entertainment to be in every town...then be prepared to be disappointed or pay through the nose :-)

We travelled NZ with my family and siblings with their families, we had kids ranging from 18mths old to 16yo. so we had a hard time keeping everyone happy LOL

Because of the age of your kids it may actually be easier to travel a couple of hours before their nap time, so when they do nap you can travel for a longer period.

My choice with your family dynamics would be....

Fly to Auckland, Pick up a 10 seater (for comfort as well as room for extra luggage that 7-8 seater people movers dont really cater for) Ace rentals do great deals and are up for negotiations when it comes to long rentals (anything over 7 days) They also may have relocation deals for drop off in other cities.

Drive to Kaitaia via Pahia and Waitangi. Visit the historic site of New Zealands treaty signing. Not to mention the food, coast and views.

Grab a holiday home in Ahipara on the beach. Adventures (horseriding down the beach or quad biking up the beach, 4WD up the beach to Cape reinga (the northern most point of NZ. shore fishing or going out on a boat fishing. This is a great little town for Adventure as well as relaxation. www.holidayhouses.co.nz/Ahipara-Bay.asp

Make your way down through Dargaville and the Waipaua Forest, stopping to see NZ's largest trees the Kauri's Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere....one of the worlds oldest trees, to Rotorua, either circle back to Auckland or take a trip to Ruapehu and down to Wellington. catch the ferry to Picton and start a trip down to Christchurch through Hanmer Springs...to Hokitika, Franz Joseph, Wanaka and Queenstown.....do milford sounds Te anau...come back through Lake Tekapo , Mt Cook and then ending in Christchurch.

Drop car off and fly back to Auckland and back to Adelaide or christchurch to Sydney and then to Adelaide.

Tips....holiday homes for accommodation. check out costs for different dates around yours, make sure about public holidays in NZ at that time. Try doing different flight options...there are always cheap deals to other state capitals through Virgin and Jetstar as well as specials to the big cities in NZ.

If you can I do agree with the other poster....two weeks is a great time in one Island. also driving times are NOT like Australia. What time it takes to do a 100k's in Aussie takes twice the time in NZ.

Buy a thermos and pillows, travel blankets from the Warehouse or some cheap store in NZ and donate them to a charity on your way home if you dont have room for them...a little cost will make your trip so much nicer.

Have a great holiday :-)

South Island.

When my kids were that age I always preferred a slower paced holiday staying in holiday homes for at least a few days at a stretch and using them as a base. With your group and your amount of time, I would choose to do a loop around the Coromandel, Rotorua, Taupo and back to Auckland via Waitomo (caving) or Raglan (surfing). It's a small corner of the country but there is plenty to see and do, and you can go back and do more areas on other trips. I think NZ is a country best seen in chunks rather than tearing all over the place, if you live close enough to have the luxury of doing it that way.
