Where to stay - Bay of Islands

Hi there,

We will be staying three nights in Bay of Islands as part of the penultimate stay of our honeymoon (staying in Auckland for the final 2 nights!).

I have searched already and only found posts from 8 or so years ago!

We can't decide whether to stay in Paihia or Russell? We want this leg of the trip to be pretty chilled. We are staying about 1.5 hours drive away the night before so day one will probably go straight to the Stone Store & Mission House and then back towards the bay via Waitangi, then check into hotel (where ever that may be!). If we then have some time left, chill by the beach / pool for the rest of the day.

Day 2 we will likely do a coach trip to Cape Regina / 90 mile beach.

Day three will probably be a boat ride around to the hole in the rock / see or swim with wild dolpins for half day then again, chill / explore / beach for the rest of it!

We are a young couple but not party animals - would enjoy a choice of nice resturants and / or bars for drinks & food in the evening then happy to go to bed, not stay up and party all night if that helps to explain our needs!

Any help really appreicated, its our last accomodation to book. No 'cost' restriction as we would like somewhere nice, prefferable with a pool or sun deck.

Becky & Mark :)

Hi Becky and Mark,

Russell is described as romantic and provides a more relaxed atmosphere compared to Paihia. Ive stayed at the Watangi Resort several times and have found this locality and the resort to be very relaxed, with a nice pool and beach area. Food at the resort is pleasant, and it's very nice to enjoy a cocktail on the outdoor area prior to dinner. Waitangi is close to Paihia, for a variety of dining options.
