Driving for one year - recommendations & tips

Hello!

Me and my partner will be buying our own car and traveling New Zealand for a year. We have a budget of $20k and will be staying at hostels and with my family which is all over New Zealand.

We will be picking up odd jobs here and there to help pay for the trip.

Does anyone have recommendations on a vehicle? What to look for/avoid?

Any tips + places we should visit? Time is not an issue as we are both quitting our jobs for this trip. We will be starting in my house in Whangamata and going from there.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Trademe will give an idea of current prices http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars

do ensure you get a decent vehicle as it will help when it comes to reselling.

Have the AA or similar check over the car before buying.

Best of luck :)

Trademe really needs a NZ bank account to be used, so many tourist vehicles (old Campervans) never end up on the site.

Many are listed here for sale.

Old Toyotas are probably the most reliable but are often priced accordingly, with other Japanese vehicles not far behind.

You could gamble and pick up a old Land Rover, great trucks until they break down. They have a reputation as being unreliable and expensive to repair so are priced according to that reputation. But, they might even be a bit under priced.
