First time travellers to New Zealand.

Hello, We are travelling to New Zealand arriving and departing from Auckland on the 15/2/2015 to 12/03/15 26 days. We wish to see both islands and are aged 61 and 60 and are pensioners. We love the sound and the freedom of a campervan / motorhome but would need shower and toilet & comfort so thinking this may be a expensive way to travel. Petrol and also the ferry would contribute extra to this cost. Staying in hotels has it's advantages for many reasons but think it would be a bit restrictive as well. Any suggestions for affordable travel would be greatly appreciated plus suggestions on which would be the best routes to take given that we are departing from Auckland as well as arriving. Thank you

To assess your budget, check out the prices of motels (self-contained units) for various towns on this website : www.jasons.co.nz Like a campervan, staying in motels you can save money by doing your own meals.

The general norm is 1/3rd of your time on the North Island ; 2/3rds on the South Island. (South Island experts will come on board with good advice for you.)

Perhaps consider flying to into Auckland from Melbourne, same day take domestic flight to either Christchurch or Queenstown then work your way up to the North Island.

What interests do you and your wife have? This will assist in giving ideas for places to see and things to do.

Motels and serviced apartments are generally less costly than a campervan and offer greater space and comfort.

Check listings here http://www.newzealand.com/int/accommodation/

and check discounted rates on wotif wotif.co.nz/hotels/…

Take a look at the many itineraries posted here on TA to get a start in deciding where to go. Once you have a rough plan post for our comments.

You have a great number of days to explore, but you will still need to be ruthless in making your final wish list.

happy planning :)
