3 weeks with a 6 year old in NZ

We'd love some ideas on what to visit with our 6 year old boy during a three week planned holiday in Oct, Nov or Dec (timing unfixed yet). Experience has taught that if he's not bored we all have a good time. We don't want to do long days in the car or trail round art galleries or museums.

We're open to absolutely everything packaged/organised or self planned, lazy or active, cheap or moderately expensive.

Any ideas gratefully received! Ta.

There is no need for an active 6 year old to be bored while travelling - there is always a stream to dam (always make sure you undam it before moving on) or a tree to climb or another hill to climb.

Make a wish list based on the entire family's interests, then plan a route, then post here for advice - plus ideas on what to do where.

happy planning :)

Hi Romanygrrl,

Some places in the North Island that are grouped relatively close together - up to 3 hour drives at most - include Auckland - Hobbiton - Rotorua - Taupo - Waitomo Caves.

If you also include Coromandel peninsula, there is plenty to see and do at each location. Rotorua has a range of activities, consider 2 nights stay.
