Sand dune boarding

Hi

We are wanting to go boarding down the sand dunes in the north up near Cape Rianga. We don't want to go with a tour company as we have our own transport so how can we experience this?

Thanks

Dont recommend you drive yourself to the sand dunes. the access is via a creek with soft sand. Rental cars arent covered.

If you're travelling at your own pace and don't want to go on 90mile beach in a rental car you could try sand boarding at the Hokianga Harbour. You need to take the ferry across the river from Opononi.

Hokianga Harbour is very small but truly beautiful and nowhere near as crowded as the Bay of Islands.

We did sand boarding out of Omapere. We had to take a boat over but it was just us, not a tour. It was a great day.

We saw a private car get stuck near the dunes at the start of the 90 mile Beach. You have to drive along a stream to get to the dunes and if you stop in/edge of the stream the car will sink down. That is one of the reasons why car rental companies do not let you drive there.
