Eating Gluten Free (Coeliac) - Groceries and eating out

Hi,

My youngest daughter has severe coeliac disease, therefore has to stick to a gluten free diet.

My Question is are there supermarkets/shops all around NZ that supply gluten free options and do many cafes/restaurants offer gluten free items?

My main concern is the trip from picton - kaikoura - arthurs pass - franz - wanaka, what will they have available out there?

Thanks

NZ is very much in the 21st century and surprisingly enough they too have GF citizens.

Suggest you google New World Supermarkets and Countdown Supermarkets and have a look at the products they sell? I do know that both supermarkets, like Coles and Woolworths here, have gluten free aisle space. http://www.countdown.co.nz/search-results?topsearch_query=gluten+free

By googling these two major supermarket chains in NZ you can also search for town locations ie your query re the South Island towns. Smaller towns may only have an IGA-style corner store, however they will have some form of GF foods with the South Island being such a tourist mecca.

Like Australia, most cafes and restaurants will denote GF items. If they don't, just ask - they do speak English in NZ; they can only say yes or no to your request. If they say no, then they don't want your business so go somewhere else.

Your daughter shouldn't have any issues eating out gluten free.

As mentioned by Expat - if there isn't anything tempting on the menu (all gf options will be marked on the menu), then simply ask and a special dish could be prepared.

Plus supermarkets have an entire gf section.
