Hello, We're looking for some advice/ideas for our itinerary on the North Island. We're visiting in March for the Ironman and have a few days to play with. We enjoy the outdoors, as well as getting into the culture of the places we visit through local foods, museums, etc. We don't mind the occasional touristy activity as well, in other words, we're open to almost anything. Anyways, with the Ironman, we have to be in Taupo certain days, but outside of that we are flexible. Here's what we have so far, and any help filling in the blanks would be appreciated. Thanks!
Day 1/ Arrival Day at AKL (late arrival)- check into hotel near airport
Day 2 Drive to Waitomo (any sights along the way?) maybe visit Kiwi House
Day 3 Glow worm caves (maybe a cave expedition too?)
Day 5 Taupo for the race
Day 6 Taupo for the race
Day 7 Taupo for the race
Day 8 Taupo (maybe sky diving? or a day trip up to Hobbiton if not done already?)
Day 9 Tongariro Alpine Trek
Day 14 Auckland
Day 15 Auckland (late flight home)
Day 4 is wide open at this point. Not sure if we should just head to Taupo a day early, or if we should backtrack a bit and do Hobbiton so we don't have to worry about it later in the trip?
Thanks for any input!
