nz North Island

We (2 couples- mid 50's) have hurriedly changed our NZ trip from the Nth Island to the Sth, due to the tragedy at Christchurch. We have 15 days to do a leisurely yet exciting trip and would love some inside goss. as we know little about the Nth.Enjoy walking sightseeing,a touch of adventure and fishing.

Each couple has saved well for this one but won't be doing 5 star.

We are leaving on 9th March and returning on 24th.

Flying into and out of Auckland- happy to stay at Band B, apartments or motels. Have hired vehicle to do tour.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi janet,

Plan to spend a least 4 - 5 days touring Northland (north of Auckland city). Do a loop tour driving up one coastline and down the other. If you enjoy fishing, walking, and the great outdoors in general, Northland offers plenty of these opportunities - espcially fishing. Tutukaka on Whangarei's east coast is the home of deep sea fishing with lots of charter vessels available. Good (and read affordable) motel accommodation on the coast in Tutukaka and Ngunguru; but also in Whangarei city.

Paihia, historic Russell, Kerikeri are all delightful towns in our subtropical region.March is a lovely time of year to visit. Bay cruises depart from Paihia and Russell to Cape Brett lighthouse an the Hole-in-the-Rock. Plenty of game fishing charters available in the Bay.

Waipoua Forest (ancient/giant NZ kauri trees) and excellent stands of native bush. Good motel accomm in the twin towns of Opononi-Omapere on the west coast. Matakohe kauri museum is not to be missed with its excellent displays of kauri gum and kauri timber.

South of Auckland, the volcanic region of central North Isle plateau offers endless sights and attractions. Bay of plenty is renowned for beaches, fishing, swift flowinhg streams, orchards, good weather and relaxation. Again, with many great choices for accommodation.

Enjoy your travels.

Thank you for your speedy reply! You've really given me somewhere to start. Are the Waitomo Caves as good as I've heard?

The Waitomo Caves are unsurpassed in NZ. There are a range of tour options available - plenty to keep all ages enthralled. It's an easy detour from the volcanic region to vist the caves to or from Rotorua or Taupo. The drive south to Waitomo from Auckland takes you through lush rolling farmlands, with lots of roadside cafes and art stops, as well as Hamilton city and its riverside scenery.

Waitomo area has nice accommodation too. Hamilton city of course has plenty of choice, and a huge range of dining options.

You should try and get to some of the less touristy spots....the coromandel...great beaches, walking and fishing. Taranaki for the same but very different and another fantastic place is the Whanganui river..why not get a camper van??

Just briefly, I would do five days in the north, north via SH 16 and 12 and return via SH 1, five days in the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty area and then head for New Plymouth.

New Plymouth must have so much to offer as it has been on many of our guests trips this year.

And you will be able to fit in Waitomo as well.

Thanks Anne. Coromandel was on our short list so now it sounds a must.We are going to be well looked after in NZ by the sound of things.

Wife and I have just returned and would certainly recommend Rotorua, Taupo and Waitomo Caves...Could I also suggest the Skytower Skywalk in Auckland and Jetboat at the Hukka Falls for a bit of a thrill? It was awesome (even for us fifty-somethings).
