I've booked myself a Stray pass (Short Max) (straytravel.com/explore-your-pass-options/st…) and plan to travel in Nov/Dec 2013. With the pass, the route is standard, but we get a choice as where to stay, and if we choose to spend extra nights. As such, I would like your advice on where to spend extra nights at.
Between Rotorua and Taupo, I have 3 nights. I have more or less decided on where to stay if in either of these places, but I wonder if I should stay 2 nights in Rotorua, and then 1 in Taupo, or all three in Taupo, with a morning visit in Rotorua.
While in Rotorua, I plan do Zorbing, the geothermal spot - maybe Hells Gate, and if time allows, do the Skydive at Taupo from here instead (http://www.skydivetaupo.co.nz/) in case weather is not as good when I get to Taupo. Make hay while the sun shines, right? I may go for Agroventures if budget and time allows for it, but I am travelling alone, so I wonder it would be as fun attempting the rides alone. I'll be staying at a hostel near Fenton Street or Hinemaru Street. I am not as bothered by the sulphur smells.
In Taupo, I only intend to do Skydiving. We'll be passing by Huka Falls on the bus. It is a standard overnight stay destination with Stray bus. If I have done the Skydive by here, I may take a scenic walk around the lake, and simply relax (my trip is jam packed with activities so I need my time-outs.) I'll be staying at a hostel near Heu Heu Street or Taniwha Street.
While at Taupo, if I have completed the Skydive by then, I may again make a headstart and attempt the Tongariro Crossing from Taupo with Tongariro Expeditions which offer that service. Or I may just save the crossing for when I get to National Parks (we head over to Blue Duck Station at Whakahoro for a night first) and do the Crossing with Adrift Outdoor Guided Adventures (I can spend 1 night or 3 nights at National Parks), and hope the weather is favourable.
So what do you guys think? 2 night in Rotorua and 1 night in Taupo or a morning in Rotorua and 3 nights in Taupo?
