One week North Island

Hello all,

In one month me and my boyfriend will be heading to NZ. We will fligh into Auckland, than will be travelling one week on the North Island, than go south. Here is our planned itinerary for the North Island:

24/10

we arrive in the afternoon in Auckland. We will be there 4 days, recover from the jetlag,

sight seeing, Maybe daytrip to Coromandel.

28/10

head south to Matamata, Hobbinton Tour in the afternoon, stay for the nigth

29/10

to Rotorua early in the morning, sightseeing and in the evening Hangi

30 + 31/10

Tongariro National Park. Is it worth staying two nights if you will not do the crossing? We like walks for one or two hours, but we've never done trekking before, so we are not quite sure what to do.

1 + 2/11

Whanganui and Whanganui River, jetboating. Is there time to go to Stratford and discover the Forgotten World Highway?

3/11

arrive in Wellington in the morning. We have planned to catch the 2:30 am ferry on Monday 4/11 to Picton.

Please comment. Advices are welcome ;-) Many thanks in advance

Hi Sultani, here are some suggestions:-

24 October: Auckland 3 nights only - afternoon arrival, then spend 2 days exploring city attractions and do a day-trip to Waiheke Island, or Rangitoto.

27 October: Set off for Matamata in morning, early afternoon Hobbiton tour, continue to Rotorua accommodation.

28 & 29 October: Rotorua accommodation, explore thermal and other attractions, including Maori hangi feast and concert.

30 October: Tongariro NP via Taupo, short walks (up to 2 hours) from Whakapapa Village on Mt Ruapehu - …govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/…

31 October: Stratford using Forgotten Highway route. Time permitting, Dawson Falls track on Mt Taranaki - …govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/…

1 & 2 Nov: Wanganui and Whanganui River

3 Nov: Wellington....

Hi

Presumably you will be hiring a car.

You could easily spend 3.5 days in Auckland and the surrounding area but with you limited time 2.5 days ( 3 nights would probably be enough.

Given your interest in short walks I would suggest that you head out to the Waitakere Ranges and Auckland's west coast beaches which are about an hour's drive from the city centre. Apart from the beaches there are some 300kms of walking tracks in the Ranges. If you do head out to the Ranges call in at the Arataki Visitor Centre, on Scenic Drive about 6kms from Titirangi Village, where you will be able to get information about walks etc - there are plenty of 1 to 2 hour walks.

As Frangipani suggest go to Stratford using the Forgotten Highway and then on Wanganui.

Otherwise what you are planning looks fine.

Enjoy your visit to NZ.

Thanks a lot frangipani and lonekaurilodge for your suggestions.

We will not be able to be less time in Auckland, as we have planned to meet some friends there on SUN 27.10. and it's the only place and date possible.

So we probably:

*head on to Rotorua after visiting Hobbinton

*only spend one ningt in Tongariro area

*go via Forgotton World Highway to Stratford

Two more questions:

*Should we skip one ningth in Wanganui/W. River area and have 2 days in Wellington? How long is the drive form Wanganui to Wellington?

Thanks again! You all in this forum are doing such a great job!

Wanganui to Wellington driving distance and road conditions are both comfortable - just under 3 hours drive. Wellington is well worth a 2 night stay.

If you like one or two hour walks, Wellington is a fabulous place. The 'City to Sea' walks take as short or as long as you like and you will never be bored by the wonderful views. I agree with Frangipani08 that two nights in Wellington is worthwhile.
