just a few days in North Island - help needed!

Hi all, I would appreciate some suggestions for touring North Island for Christmas this year. We will be leaving South Island on 27th December and will have until 31st December to get to Auckland where we want to be for New Year's Eve celebration. We would like to see the Rotorua / Matamata areas - Hobbiton, Waitomo glowworm caves and the thermal wonderland and ideally Coromande peninsula if we have time. We will be driving from Wellington (is it worth spending some time there?) with 2 girls aged 7 & 11. How long should we allow to spend in Auckland?

Any suggestions and recommendations would be more than welcome.

Many thanks

Dushy

Hi Dushy,

Spend at least one night in Wellington. It's a lovely capital city, with some neat attractions that are centralised. Who knows how smooth or rough the ferry will be on the day you cross. Be good to have a base on land with children travelling.

The remainder of your trip to Auckland can be done through 2 options:-

27th, ferry to Wellington

28th, Wellington - Napier.

29th & 30th, Napier - Taupo and Rotorua (2 nights with side trip to Hobbiton).

31st, Rotorua - Waitomo Caves - Auckland

OR drive Wellington to Taupo on the 28th (long journey). 1 night Rotorua - 29th. Visit Hobbiton on way to Coromandel peninsula - 30th, followed by Auckland for NYE.
