Travelling from Lake Taupo to Wellington

I want to take the scenic route through the volcanic area near Turangi but AA maps is saying it will take almost 6hrs this way!

Also wondering if anyone could reccommend which way to travel from Coromandel to Rotorua coast or inland?

It is quite a long drive from Taupo to Wellington - I would say 5 hours and then allow some time to stop for breaks along the way so 6 hours is quite realistic. I presume you are referring to the route along the Desert Road? This is state highway 1 and is the most direct route.

In answer to your other question, from Coromandel, you'll drive down through Thames and then you head pretty much due south to Rotorua if you want to take the most direct route. Rotorua is an inland town. If you want to go via the coast you'd head towards Tauranga first then cut across inland to Rotorua but this would take you longer and it's not a purely costal road so if you're doing it for coastal scenery you'll need to be prepared to detour away from the main road and make stops along the way.

Yes, detouring via National park Village, but not entering the NP, adds about 30-40 minutes. You'll not really have time to stop along the way, although Lake Rotoaira is worth a walk and you could have lunch in Ohakune.
