Does anybody know if Uber operates on Waiheke Island?
Hi Brad,
Not yet, unfortunately. We checked that detail yesterday. There are plenty of taxis waiting at the main island wharf. We find taxis here on the island more affordable compared to Auckland city prices.
Do people take those taxis from winery to winery? I'm trying to figure out how to sample a bunch of wineries without using a tour company or driving while drinking wine all day!
Mike, you can hire a taxi for a flat rate to take you to as many wineries as you can fit in to the agreed upon number of hours.
We did that once, 5 hours, 3 wineries and lunch at Cable Bay. I can tell you that driving was out of the question at the end of the day so the cost of the taxi was well worth it... I don't recall the cost but it didn't seem outrageous at the time, The driver was a local who lived on the island and knew a lot about the wineries and knew the staff.
I did have a car on that visit but the prudent choice was to have someone else do the driving.
Sounds like a great plan, especially if two couples split the cost! Will a taxi haul four persons? An approximate cost would be great information!?
You should be able to find a taxi capable of 4 pax.
One firm currently charges $100(NZD) an hour during peak season, $80(NZD) off peak. I'm guessing these are fair prices although an independent driver might be a bit less.

Edited: 6 years agoThere's also a hop-on, hop-off bus option. It has 15 stops, many of them wineries. The current price is a bundle price with the ferry for $55 pp. https://www.fullers.co.nz/tours/waiheke-explorer-hop-on-hop-off-tour/
There is also the option by using the public bus to get around:
