Breakfast

Arriving on an early morning flight approx 5.00 a.m. from San Francisco and driving to Paihia. Would it be best to grab some breakfast before we left at the airport or are there places we could stop on route. (planning on travelling via the forest route). Thanks.

For your own safety, and the safety of everyone else on the road, please do not get off a flight from San Fran and directly behind the wheel of a car. Plan to spend your first day and night in Auckland.

Jet lag is a killer. Every year tourists kill themselves doing this on arrival in NZ. They also often wipe out a NZ family.

I agree with WL.If this is your first visit to NZ. You would be mad to get behind a wheel the minute you get off the plane at 5am. Spend your first night in Auckland.

Hi

I also agree that you do not fly in at 5.00 am and then attempt to drive to Paihia. It is a long drive even after a good nights sleep.

But you do not have to go into Auckland for your first night. Collect your rental car and head north either the west coast or the east coast and stay maybe only an hour from the airport. There is a wide range of accommodation out west (Waitakeres, Kumeu, or Muriwai) or east (Orewa or Whangaparoa)

Next morning if you have stayed in a Bed and breakfast you can set off for Paihia with a good nights sleep and a great breakfast behind you. Travelling via the Forest route there is just so much to see and do on the way to Paihia. But please do not attempt it on your first day.

Hi

I totally agree with the other posters.

If you have not driven in New Zealand before then you may wish to take a look at:

Take it easy and enjoy your visit.

Hi again

Forgot to mention that if you are planning to go via the forest, which a great way to go, then you may wish to consider overnighting in the Hokianga and save the hop over to Paihia for the following day.

From Auckland to the Hokianga is a good day's drive particularly if you stop at the Kauri Museum at Matakohe (well worth it) and in the forest to see the large kauri known as Tane Mahuta or Lord of the Forest. The Hokianga is a beautiful area and you will be able to find nice accommodation overlooking the water.
