NORTH IS: SH1 from Auckland to Wellington via Desert Road.
Auckland 2 nights
Taupo 1 night
Wellington 2 nights (depart morning ferry)
SOUTH IS: SH1 from Picton to Christchurch via Kaikoura.
Christchurch 1 night
Presumably you have 6 nights? Otherwise you would need to trim 1 night off if its 6 days, but only 5 nights in total. Fairly tight timeframe to sightsee.
Do you mean only 6 days in NZ or 6 days for the trip AFTER doing something in Auckland? What do you want to see?
I would spend 1 day in Auckland; drive to Rotorua via Waitomo Caves or via Hobbiton (Matamata) depending on your interests. 1 or 2 nights in Rotorua then drive to Wellington via Taupo; (or 1 night Rotorua & 1 night Napier);
1-2 nights in Wellington (Te Papa; Zealandia); Wellington to Christchurch via Kaikoura.
We do have 6 nights, arriving in AKL amost midnite and leaving 7 days later from CHC at 3 pm. We have been to Christchurch, Rotorua, Taupo, Matamata and Wellington before. We have never been to Auckland. We love NZ so much that we always squeeze a little holiday to NZ almost every year. We also have 2 kids under 6. Any suggestion and recommendation would be good. What would be the most convenient route with places of interest to see. Will pic k up a car from AKL and return in CHC. Thank you guys in advance.
The most convenient & shortest route driving Auckland to Christchurch has been given above - use SH1 all the way.
Pleased to hear that you enjoy NZ and keep coming back.
There are a number of options.
All are just as easy but they do vary in distance by up to 100kms.
Good that you want to see some of Auckland - bear in mind that the best is to be found in the surrounding area . This and given that you have been to Taupo and Rotorua I would suggest that you consider going the western route via Otorohanga (Kiwi House), Taumaranui and then back across to Waioru and then on down or alternatively via Whanganui. You could also include a visit to Waitomo Caves if you wanted to.
The above would be +/- 650 kms which is about the same as going via Taupo, Taihape, Marton, Bulls, and Levin. The eastern route via Napier is another option but it is another 100kms which makes a difference.
Thanks for all the suggestions! We will definetly go to the Volcano as my son is into it now. We love NZ so much may even consider living there :):). We try to maximise our 7 days within limit and mya try the New Playmouth route. We can always come back and see the rest. We have been hiring our car through Omega. Any other suggestion for car hire and which town to stay for the nigt between Auckland and Wellington? Thanks
