Snorkeling in July

Hi Anyone,

Where can I go snorkeling in New Zealand in July. I'll be in the country for 3 weeks making Rotorua a home base, but can drive anywhere.

Suggestions appreciated!

It really won't be any fun snorkelling in July! Brrrr........it's the middle of winter! And there won't be much to see as alot of the shore fish move further out into "warmer" water.

There are two marine reserves that you drive to but both would require an overnighter, they're too far to do as a day trip from Rotorua. Hahei on the Coromandel and Goat Island near Matakana which is just north of Auckland. Goat island would be the better one of the two to swim, shallower water and more geared up for visitors, you'll definitely need a hooded wetsuit, you can hire them plus snorkle etc here;

Snorkle gear for hire at Hahei, see the bottom of this site;

Purely from a water temperature point of view the best time would be from late December to early April and/or a few weeks either side depending on how the summers shaping up. You can snorkel all year round but you would need a wetsuit and be pretty hardy.

Regarding areas to snorkle, the two places mentioned above are the best but you can snorkle anywhere along the coast line. There actually isn't that much to see though(hence the marine reserves are better) we're not like the tropics with lots of colourful fish and corals etc but still some interesting areas.

January to June are the best times for snorkeling when the weather is settled. New Zealand has great places to snorkel, starting in the sub tropical north right down the islands.

Wellington is surrounded by natural marine wonders and there are many dive shops in the city. The southern coast has superb diving.

Have a look at newzealandnz.co.nz/scuba-diving-snorkelling for further diving locations and information within NZ.

Within easy reach of Auckland is Goat island (about 1.5 hours drive north) which is an excellent snorkelling site that you can access from the shore.

The water will be cold at this time of year, but if you have a wetsuit then you should have no problems and the snorkelling conditions and water clarity should still be good.
