8 hour stop-over... ideas?

I've booked myself in for an 8-hour stop over, landing at 11am (from SIN) and leaving at 7:30pm (for CHC) on Tuesday 10 Aug. This would be my first time in Auckland, although I'm no stranger to the south island, so I definitely wouldn't have any problem driving. I'm not really interested in the history/museum type of things for this trip, but would probably like to have some sort of a crash-course for Auckland, and probably going to some must-visit places. What would be your suggestions for such a short stop-over?

Depending on what you're into, but Auckland CBD must-do's are:

1. Sky Tower

2. Queen Street (and some of its lanes off the main drag) for some window shopping and people watching

3. Karangahape Road or K'Rd, and onto Ponsonby for lunch or wine

3. Downtown/Viaduct Basin for early dinner

The zoo is a great idea as people have mentioned, also Sky Tower. Other possiblities are going up the top of one the extinct volcanic cones around Auckland - Mt Eden or One Tree Hill for example, or taking the ferry across the harbour to Devonport. The ferries leave from near the Viaduct basin mentioned in one of the posts above.

If you really want to go shopping, I personally think Newmarket is better than Queen Street. Ponsonby is also interesting for shopping. Given the limited amount of time you have in Auckland, I'm guessing that you'd prefer to do some sightseeing.

Hi

You won't be able to fit them all in but here are some suggestions which depending on your interests may help you.

The Explorer Bus - a good way to get an overview of Auckland. Have a look at:

www.explorerbus.co.nz

For culture and history you may wish to visit the Auckland Museum where daily there is an excellent Maori concert/cultural performance Have a look at:

www.aucklandmuseum.com

For nature and scenery and if time permits I would recommend a trip out to the Waitakere Ranges an area of exceptional natural beauty where you will find black sand beaches, regenerating forest, waterfalls, walks and fine views. Have a look at:

www.bushandbeach.co.nz

or

www.coast2coastnz.com

Viaduct Basin or Mission Bay for cafes and restaurants. The Viaduct Basin is more lively than Mission Bay and the Maritime Museum is located there. Mission Bay is more relaxing and has nice views across the harbour towards the volcanic (extinct) island of Rangitoto.

Sky Tower - there is revolving restaurant at the top but you go there for the views rather than the food.

Shopping – small boutique type shops in Parnell or for larger shops and Malls just up the road in Newmarket, arguably Auckland’s best shopping area.

Just a 45 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland is Waiheke Island

www.waihekenz.com

The ferry ride is good way of seeing the harbour.
