Auckland Airport Accommodation

Suggestions, please for good cheap accommodation close to Auckland airport for about 5-7 days from 31st Dec 2010. Budget about $80 per day. Will also want a campervan up to $20,000.

Many thanks to all who read and / or respond.

Are you sure you want to be near the airport for all that time. There are a couple of places that you can stay for $80 but they're not flash. The Kiwi International is probably the closest, just 5 km away, and wotif shows rooms at under $80. That site has a useful feature allowing you to put in your maximum price and then it will map all matching places. Its one downside is no reviews.

As for a sub 420,000 campervan, you won't see many dealers selling at that price, so will probably need to buy privately. Trademe has a good selection.

For that length of time you maybe best to look at accommodation closer to the city, backpackers, youth hostel type with share facilities may meet your price range.Facilities like shops and restaurants are very limited near the airport.

$20,000 wont buy you much of a campervan and do remember that to be successful in New Zealand camper vans should be fully compliant, with toilet and shower. Otherwise you will be very restricted where you can stay over night. Check out sites like www.camping.org.nz and www.holidayparks.com

We stayed in the Auckland Airport Pacific Inn at Mangere and we were content with the standard of accomodation. See my review. However I am not sure if I would stay there for a week as it is some way out from the city centre, but only about two/three kilometres from the airport, but if you have a car then life is easier.

Thank you, everyone - very helpful ideas and information. We'll probably (somehow) get ourselves to a backpackers towards the city centre, and look about for a campervan. I realise that a budget of $20,000 is les than ideal, but we plan to use it for 3 months then sell at a loss which should provide transport and accommodation at a cost less than hotels etc. It will also give us more freedom to shop and enjoy local produce cooked rather than bought.

Thanks, again,

George.

Staying in the Mangere area (where the airport is situated) may not be the flashest part of Auckland, yet it does have merits over the Auckland CBD. For one thing, there is plentiful accommodation, at cheaper rates too, with plentiful parking (mostly free at accommodation) more spacious surroundings. good shopping centres/malls nearby, and the country air is delightful.

With 2 upgrades to the motorway system aroound Mangere, coming onstream just recently, the traffic flows north and south from this suburb provide good access routes for travellers - especially for those who aren't keen on parking larger rental vehicles in a foreign city.

Mangere is a good base to enable easy access to the many car yards in South Auckland and along Gt South Rd. Ive just done a quick search online and have found 2 very tidy campervans for $20K (NZ dollars) - ex rentals, both for sale along Gt South Road - check out Maui and United websites.

All the best George!
