Hi, just got back from New Zealand today. We spent our last four days in Auckland without a car. Are you looking for adventure trips? If so, you should try canyoning with "canyonz". If you want a great tour that does a little of everything, check out "coast to coast Eco tours". They take you out of the city to do wine tasting, honey tasting, to see the rainforest, the gannet colony (it's beautiful on the coast where they live) and then to their farm to see and feed sheep and other animals, also to learn about new Zealand life and sample some nz food. You could also do a day trip to coromandel on the ferry if you want something really sedate.

Hi

Although it is getting better, we unfortunately only have limited public transport in Auckland.

The best of Auckland is to be found in the surrounding area and in particular the Waitakere Ranges to the west and the rural around Kumeu to the north west.

For day trips take a look at:

www.coast2coastnz.com

www.absolutetours.co.nz

www.newzealandtours.travel

You may wish also to consider a day trip over to Waiheke Island – a 45 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland a good way of seeing the harbor.

Have a look at :

If you are adventurous look at taking the ferry to Rangitoto and climbing to the top. Or a day trip to Tiritiri, an island bird sanctuary.

Tours are aplenty, check out the listings on things to do on Trip Advisor.

Most popular at the moment are Time Unlimited Tours and Milestone tours and depending on your age or ability a ferry trip to Devonport and a Magic Broomstick Tour could be very exciting.

Do not miss the Sky Tower and our wonderful Auckland Museum with its Maori experience.

I can recommend a day-trip to Tiri Tiri Metangi, if the weather is good. Might be best to book at least a day in advance, as I think they only allow a set number of people onto the island each day. You can explore the island on your own, or the best way to see it and appreciate all the birds and wildlife is with a guide who offer their services free of charge.

I second the Waiheke Island reccommendation. It's a relatively short ferry ride from viaduct harbour area. There are galleries, shops, and restaurants, although you may need a reservation especially on a Friday or Saturday night. There are some excellent wineries to taste at and beaches to swim. It's small and quaint.

There are a number of options for seeing the Auckland Region without a car:

Ferry to Rangitoto Island, the prominent volcanic cone which can be seen from the Auckland waterfront, and then walk to the summit.

Ferry to Waiheke Island – a good way of seeing the harbour and for lunch

For ferry details have a look at:

www.fullers.co.nz

For the rain forest a visit to the Waitakere Ranges is a must. There are a several operators who do half day and full day trips to the Ranges and the rural area just to the north. Have a look at:

www.coast2coastnz.com

www.absolutetours.co.nz

www.newzealandtours.travel

www.bushandbeach.co.nz

For Maori culture in Auckland the cultural show at the Auckland Museum is excellent.
