Day Trip to Waiheke

My family and I (5 adults) want to spend a day on Waiheke Is. while in Auckland and see some of the wineries there. I know Fullers can take me to Waiheke but what's the best way to get around the island to the individual wineries once we're there? We'll be there on a Monday and according to the Fullers website they don't operate their buses on Mondays. What other options are there if we don't want to rent a car?

Also, are there any wineries that you recommend (besides Mudbrick which we already know we're going to)? We are mostly sweet lush wine lovers - fruity reds and lighter whites.

Thanks in advance!

There are plenty of taxis on Waiheke

To give you some idea of the cost I had to go to Waiheke earlier this week on business and a taxi from the ferry terminal to Ostend was NZ$20.00.

The other alternative is the bus which I have used on previous occasions. Not exactly air conditioned luxury but a good way of getting round the island if you are not in too much of a hurry.

Hi Mrs_Lotus,

Two alternative options inc lude hiring a rental car from Matiatia harbour (our main entry point), or arranging a specialist winery tour with Ananda Tours, Jaguar Tours, Nikau Tours among others - waiheke.aucklandnz.com .

A number of our wineries have licenced cafes. There are also some nice choices for lunch within Oneroa village.

Enjoy your island experiences.

I love Cable Bay Vineyard more than Mudbrick. http://www.cablebayvineyards.co.nz/

I haven't been to Te Whau and Peacock Sky vineyard but alot of people rave about it. http://www.peacocksky.co.nz/

Peacock Sky is owned by Americans and is smaller and more personal. I met the owners at the Air NZ Wine Awards Gala Dinner and they're really nice too.

If you want something special for just your family then a wine tour is probably a good option. This way you get to visit a number of great vineyards, dont have to worry about someone having to do the driving and everyone can enjoy their day. A number of Waiheke Island wine tour companies operate on the island and will pick you up from the ferry and return you back to the ferry at the end of your day. Do a search on Waiheke Island wine tours to see what is available.

I agree with the first post regarding taxis. It's a great, relatively inexpensive option especially if you want to drink wine.

I've been to Te Whau and loved it. Make sure you book and ask for a table with a view (outside if the weathers nice) because it's absolutely stunning!
