Whale watching in January

Hi,

Where in NZ in January is the best place to see the whales. We will be traveling both north and south for 18 days.

Cheers

Kaikoura is virtually guaranteed, teenage whales are resident all year round in the deep sea trench that runs in close to the coast line at Kaikoura. Whales can be spotted in the Bay of Plenty(Tauranga), Hauraki Gulf(Auckland) and the Bay of Islands(Paihia) but these are ususally passing through and are seen by passengers on dolphin watch/swim tours. These are also usually other species of whales, not the huge sperm whales of Kaikoura.

Book a tour as early as possible in the day, the sea is usually calmer in the morning, the whales more active and it also gives you a chance to transfer to a later sailing if your trip gets cancelled due to weather. Some sort of sea sickness remedy is recommended too, a lazy swell will catch you out and spoil your adventure.

Thanks for your help. Do I need to wait till we get there to book so we can see what the weather is like or do they refund if we can't go out. We are only passing through Kaikoura on our way to Bleinheim and the North Island so we won't be able to go back another day.
