Snow around Auckland - late August / early September?

Hi! I am travelling to Auckland on the last weekend in August. I understand there is still snow this time of year... is that correct? If so, where is the best place to see and experience it? We're able to drive as we will have a hire car but would prefer not to drive long distances. We are not intending to ski as unfortunately both my husband and I have knee injuries! Thanks so much!

Near Auckland is an artificial ski place called Snow Planet. Otherwise, the closest place with snow will be Mt Ruapehu. It will be about a 5 hour drive from Auckland. Auckland is too warm for snow.

If you are only going to the North Island, then head towards Taupo / Turangi / Okahune / Mt Ruapehu areas for snow. Drive time from Auckland approx. 4hrs without stops. Dependent upon your budget you could book accommodation at Chateau Tongariro Hotel, they have winter weekend deals.

Don't worry about snow anywhere in the North Island at that time of the year apart from the Skifields :Turoa and Mt Ruapehu and if an unexpected unseasonal southerly storm hits the North Island, the Desert road, and that is unlikely.

Thanks for the tips guys... eek did not realise that about Auckland weather! Random question but is there a website you check to see snow forcasts? How do you know if the snow is good on the day you plan to travel? Sorry if these are silly questions - totally clueless Aussie here!

Look at metservice.com. That website also advises if the fields are closed. The Ruapehu ski fields should be opened until late October. Whakapapa and Turoa are the two commercial fields. Turoa has 145cm of snow on the upper part of the field so there will be plenty there in late August, if not more.
