Airport to Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki

Hello, we have around 10 hours in Auckland airlport on the way to LA, and we'd like to get out and tretch our legs rather then sit in the lounge all day. We were thinking of going to the art gallery - can we take puclic transport from the airport to the Gallery or do we need to take a taxi? any suggestions for sepening 4 hours or so in Auckland on a Monday between around 9/9:30am 2pm would be appreciated, thanks you.

The airbus will get you within a couple of blocks of the Art Gallery (the bus runs down Queen Street, the gallery is on the corner of Wellesley and Kitchener streets). Count on about an hour to get there from the airport (including time waiting for the bus) and the same to get back.

When you say you have 4 hours, I take it that this is supplemental to the gallery? If you want something else cultural, the War Memorial Museum could be a good option. If you want a more scenic/food and drink thing, maybe the ferry to Devonport, with a meal either there or down on the wharf area (Viaduct/Wynyarrd/Britomart all have lots of options).

Hi NZBarry - when you say the airbus - is this something that leaves from the international airport terminal? didnt realise it would take an hour each way, but having said that I guess the bus ride itself with be 'scenic' ie we will have things to look at? we have been to Auckland before, but just dont want to sit in the airport all day - if its raining perhaps the gallery - other wise Devonport would be nice - it it approx an hour to get to Devonport from the airport too?

Sorry one other question Barry - is Devonport shops etc all open on a Monday? I think last time we went there it was on the weekend.

I wouldn't call the drive from airport to the city scenic, but it is a while since I've been up that way.

No the drive in from AKL could hardly be called scenic as it passes through suburbia and light industrial areas, but since you have 10 hours ( is that after allowing for immigration etc) anything would be better than hanging around the airport!!

Since the Airbus would take you downtown, I'd plan to take the Devonport Ferry & have lunch over there, followed by a walk around the VIaduct Basin as your fine weather option, with the museum and Art Gallery as back ups for a rainy day.

The airbus runs every 10-15 minutes from outside both airport terminals and in mid morning traffic is likely to take 40 odd minutes, so by giving yourself an hour each way you will have a fairly good idea of how much time you have up your sleeve. It costs $26 return so is much cheaper than a taxi and not that much slower, since it generally has not bus stops until it hits the CBD.

Weekends are the busiest times in Devonport, so you might find some of the shops do take a cheeky day off on a Monday but certainly not all of them.

It may be easier to see the Art Gallery first. The Airbus drivers all ask where their passengers are going, and announce the stop as well as locate the people who are getting off at various stops. The Airbus route passes the corner of Kitchener street (opposite side of road) before it turns onto Queen St.

Queen Street slopes towards the harbour. Ergo it's easier to stroll down Q St in place of the reverse. Returning to the airport you'll also find it easier to board the bus at the Airbus terminus, next to Pier 1 at ferry buildings, than search out the Airbus midtown from one of the stops on this busy road.

Besides a ferry ride to Devonport, or a stroll around Viaduct Harbour/Wynyard Q, the Explorer hop on/off bus departs from Ferry Building and circuits the main attractions including Auckland Museum, the waterfront, Art Gallery, Skytower - http://www.explorerbus.co.nz/index.html
