Area and hotel recommendations

Hello:

We are preparing for a 6 week trip to the beautiful country of New Zealand. We arrive in Auckland in early February 2014. We need a hotel to recover from jet lag and orient ourselves before setting out to explore much more of the North and South Island.

In reviewing the travel guides I am struggling to sort out the different parts of the city. It looks like city center near the sky tower is the best area for a tourist.

We are looking for a budget friendly hotel (less than $120NZD or $100USD). We will NOT have a car so walking distance to the sights and bus access is extremely important.

While in Auckland we plan to go up in the Sky Tower, walk around the harbor and hike the Rangitolo loop.

We much appreciate if you can steer us to locations/neighborhoods/properties to research.

We are in our late 40s and will be backpacking for the remainder of our time in NZ. We are ok with budget/backpacker facilities but they need to be clean.

Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions.

For example: Is Parnell to far from the central attractions? Is there bus service/public transport as we will not have a car. Thanks.

We stayed at the City Lodge. This is all private rooms with a wonderful kitchen and common area. It is walking distance from the harbour and the city centre. It is spotlessly clean and the staff were very helpful.

Hi Mary,

Have a search around www.wotif.com to gain an idea of accommodation locations and indication of prices. If something appeals now, better to prebook if you can with February being a popular month for tourism, but also to gain a good deal on prices.

Parnell will require a bus ride to the CBD, or if you are fit its walkable to downtown, but an uphill hike back to Parnell again.

Around Skycity area, there are a number of reasonably priced hotels on Hobson Street. Book a shuttle service to reach hotels in this area. Alternatively hotels along the Airbus route including the Mercure hotels on Queen Street are usually priced within your indicative budget.

In February (high season), NZD$120 won't go all that far as a budget per night - it is possible to get a room for that but it may not be the best or be in the best location.

I personally think the bottom end of the CBD is the best location for being able to easily walk to most areas and being near the train, bus & ferry terminals ....

My normal recommendations in this area are AUCKLAND HARBOUR OAKS & CELESTION WALDORF, both apartment style hotels.

They sometimes have special rates at about NZD$120, but I suspect not in February (you might be looking at more like NZD$150)

If you go a little bit higher up into Auckland CBD there are cheaper options...eg.

ECONOLODGE

IBIS STYLES

JUCY HOTEL

KIWI INTERNATIONAL

These are all in reasonable locations and are reasonable options but you get what you pay for in size/quality of room.

Thanks for the great info. I have been able to eliminate Parnell. Seems too far.

Andychef - What do you mean by "bottom end" and "higher up" Also, what dies CBD stand for?

Thanks for helping a Yank (USA) get the hang of Auckland. (I can't wait to go!) We are currently working on booking some great walks. :-)

Auckland's central business district (CBD) surrounds the golden mile known as Queen Street. The downtown end is where the harbour/waterfront are located. Ridges on either side of Queen Street include major arterial routes to/from the harbour area. Skycity Hotel/Skytower sit atop one of the ridges. Hobson Street follows the rigeline above Queen Street to its west. Hence names of inner city streets will refer to Victoria St East or West depending on where they arise from Queen St.

Parnell suburb is built on another hill of Auckland, with a gully between it and the CBD proper. Hence my reference to the steep walk or hike to reach Parnell from the CBD area. When you arrive Auckland city, you'll notice a series of volcanic hills that make up the inner suburbs of Auckland including Mt Eden, and One Tree Hill among others. Rangitoto island which dominates Auckland's harbour is one of the youngest volcanoes found in the Auckland region. If you enjoy coastal hikes, this small hill with regenerating native bush is a beauty, and easily reached by ferry which departs from the downtown-waterfront part of Auckland.
