Maori tour of Auckland?

We are looking for a Maori guided tour in Auckland for our visit in February. It would be even better if the firm was owned by indigenous people. Thanks

The Auckland War Memorial Museum has a Maori cultural performance and collection that are worth seeing.

I don't know of any tours though, sorry.

It would probably break a few laws to market a "Maori tour" as that may appear discriminatory. Having said that there are many attractions etc owned by various Iwi. Everything from hotels, jet boats, cultural performanves etc. You would never know.

Culture is a major draw-card anyway, and tours focusing on Maori heritage values and its rich cultural history it surely couldn't be discriminatory? Rotorua places a strong emphasis on its Maori values with its rich cultural heritage. And as mentioned earlier ,the Auckland Museum has a twice daily Maori cultural performance delivered by the predominant tribe of the surrounding area. Its held in the Maori artefacts section on the ground floor.

Looking at this website may help - you can search things to do by category and geographic location.

Or this website, specifically dedicated to indigenous tourism experiences, also searchable by location.

I am yet to find a authentic traditional maori experience in NZ. Most tourists experiences combine a modern and pre- european dimensions of an ancient culture designed to create a profit. The tourist orientated mock ups of traditional maori life are an insult to our forefathers and undermine our true history.

Hmm, SouthIslandBill, if the Government placed laws / regulations (like as most overseas countries do), on who were able to become tourism operators things may be different. Today in NZ, anyone can put on the hat of a tour operator (call themselves "unique", "eco", "indigenous") and no tourist is to know otherwise. To have to compete against such is a sore-point with [true] legitimate operators!
