Departing Auckland- S. mtWay or Tamaki Drive first?

Departing Auckland by car (pick up Beach Rd nr harbour) on an early Monday morning and wondering whether we should route ourselves along the Tamaki Drive /Mission Bay/St Heliers Bay road then ... not sure yet how to rejoin the Southern motorway out!!!.

Or just go straight out on the S motorway????

If the Tamaki area and coastal path is so nice alternatively is it easy to visit it by public transport while we stay over in Auckland at the weekend??

thanks for any assistance in advance.

Well you could just go for a drive around to Mission Bay and to the end of the beaches, turn around and retrace your trip, and onto the Southern Motorway and off you go. It is a beautiful part of the city, and will not take much time to do.

For a Monday morning exit from Auckland, recommend you take the nearest motorway on-ramp.

To explore and enjoy the waterfront along Tamaki Drive, do this at the weekend when there's less commuter traffic. There are frequent buses heading along the waterfront to Mission Bay and St Heliers. Catch a bus from the Britomart area of downtown. Take your time wandering around this lovely harbour-side area, with good cafes and beach reserve-picnic areas along the waterfront suburbs.

Thanks guys for the recommendations.

The public transport way looks doable in which case schedule for Fri,Sat or Sunday?. Basic check is a regular bus and only 15 minutes. It would appear that you can only get a one journey ticket out there and then walk around and then get another ticket back???

Probably ok.

Alternative would be to include this side trip (1/2 day) when we have a Discovery Pass for the day (hop on and off other buses along the route?). Was thinking of using this when we do the Devonport trip. Perhaps too much for one day?

When you get off the bus at St Heliers, continue walking up Cliff Road, till you get to the lookout. It is a most stunning view of the Auckland Harbour, out to the islands and back to the city, well worth the bit of a puff.

HI. We are planning a 2 week trip to NZ. My husband is joining the Tarawera Ultra run. What would be a good itinerary to see NZ if we have 2 weeks to explore ?

Thank you.
